Richard “Tooter” Waites began his rodeo career competing in calf-roping and steer wrestling. He became the first person to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo and the National Finals Rodeo the same year. Waites went on to have a respected career as a roping & cutting horse trainer, and showing horses in the AQHA competitions. He was one of the early inductees to the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.
